01What ends up in your browser
We place one thing ourselves, and only if you say yes to it: the two Google Analytics measurement cookies. As long as you have not made that choice, there is no Google Analytics on this site and no request goes to googletagmanager.com or google-analytics.com. The measurement script is only fetched after you click accept. That is separate from the typefaces, which are fetched from Google; more about those in chapter 05.
We also remember your choice itself, because otherwise you would get the same question on every page. That does not happen with a cookie but with a note in your browser storage, under the name tagaroa.toestemming. It holds only your yes or no and the date. That note never goes to a server and disappears after six months, after which we ask again.
Two elements come from another party: the typefaces and the map. Both are explained separately further down.
02The Google Analytics measurement cookie
Google Analytics counts how many people read this site, which pages they open and how they got here. To do that it places two cookies in your browser. Both are set on this site’s own domain.

We place those cookies ourselves, using a script from Google. They sit on this site’s own domain, and Google is the party that receives the data.
390 days is shorter than the two years Google sets by default. We shortened it deliberately. Your browser can shorten it further: Chrome will not accept a cookie that runs longer than 400 days, and Safari erases what a script sets in your browser after seven days without a visit to this site.
What is measured: which pages you open, how long you stay, which site or search engine you came from, what kind of device and which language your browser uses, and roughly which region you are in. No name, no email address, no advertising profile.
Your IP address is used to derive that region and is then discarded. Google states that traffic from the European Union, Switzerland and the United Kingdom arrives through servers in that region, and that the IP addresses of those visitors are not logged and not stored.
Linking to Google accounts is switched off. If you accept measurement, nothing is tied to whichever Google account you happen to be signed in to, and nothing goes to advertising products.
03Who processes the measurement data, and where
The campaign decides what is measured and why. Google processes that data for us, as a processor, under the Google Ads Data Processing Terms. That is the processing agreement Google Analytics falls under; for a customer established in the European Economic Area it is built into the terms of service. The contracting party is Google Ireland Limited in Dublin.
The sharing of measurement data with Google's other products and services is switched off. That matters: for as long as that switch is on, Google also uses the data for itself and is no longer a processor but a controller in its own right.
The data is also processed outside Europe, including in the United States. The basis for that is the European Commission adequacy decision on the EU-US Data Privacy Framework of 10 July 2023, which is currently in force, with the European Commission standard contractual clauses as a fallback. You can read those clauses at Google.
In Google Analytics the retention period is fourteen months at most. After that, the data tied to an individual visit can no longer be queried. The totalled visitor figures in the standard reports do remain; they can no longer be traced back to a visitor.
04Changing or withdrawing your choice
You can change your choice at any time, in one click, and withdrawing it is just as easy as giving it.
If you withdraw your consent, we delete the two cookies above straight away and Google Analytics is no longer loaded. What was measured before stays measured: a withdrawal works forwards, not backwards.
05The typefaces come from this site
The typefaces on this site sit on our own server and are loaded from there, together with the page. No request goes to Google, so Google does not get to see your IP address.
Until 12 August 2026 this was different: the typefaces came from Google Fonts and your browser made a connection with fonts.googleapis.com and fonts.gstatic.com to fetch them. That set no cookie, but it was a transfer of your IP address. It no longer happens.
The typefaces themselves are not ours. They are published under the SIL Open Font License, which expressly allows them to be shipped along.
06The map with the position of the boat
The Follow section shows a map from yb.tl. It gives the track and the last reported position of Tagaroa. A button sits in its place: the map only loads once you click it. Until then no request goes to yb.tl.
If you do click, that map is a window onto another site. That site sees your IP address and can set its own cookies as soon as it loads.
We have no control over exactly what yb.tl sets. What they do is set out in their own privacy and cookie policy on yb.tl.
Your click applies to this visit. We note it in your browser's session storage, under the name tagaroa.kaart. That is not a cookie, the note never goes to a server, and it disappears as soon as you close the tab. After that we ask again.
07What you can set yourself
Every browser lets you view, block and delete cookies. You will find this in the settings under privacy. If you block everything from third parties, this site keeps working; only the map stays blank.
